The last two days have been a crazy ramp to next week where we will have our GOV customer with us witnessing the testing of the product we are building. My team is the one who plans and executes that testing…will be a stressful week.

And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.  But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. Luke 9:10-11 [NKJV]

This is time right after the apostles had returned from their missions journey where the Lord had given them power over demons and the ability to heal. This is one of those passages where you see the tender heart of Jesus our Savior. Read the above passage again and think of that Man standing at the right hand of the Father in Heaven representing us and our needs.

He took them aside privately (intimately). He wanted personal alone time with His friends and disciples to hear their stories and encourage them after their travels. Somehow the multitudes of people who had been following Jesus got wind of where He was with the disciples and they came to Him. He then promptly shoo’d them away and went back to spending time with His friends….nope, that not what happened. He received them, spoke to them about the Kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.

Application:

When Jesus told the disciples that He would send a helper, this is how I think the Holy Spirit wants to be with us. He receives us when we follow and seek Him out. He reveals things about the Kingdom of God through His Living Word as we read our Bibles. He heals our hearts and gives us peace when we need it. This is the Holy Spirit inside of us Who is available when our inner spirit seeks to commune with Him. I need to constantly remind myself that this picture of Jesus above in the passage is Who the Holy Spirit is for me in this life under the sun.

First day back to work after a 4-day weekend…Meh. I really enjoyed being off. Lots of time with my kiddos and Marianne and I could have used more. I needed to be back to work though as the next 10 days are going to be quite crazy and busy.

​Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.  He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 
Luke 9:1-2 [NKJV]

On the topic of ‘Spiritual Gifts’ comes a lot about what God’s Word has to say, as well as a lot of opinion around the Christian community on said gifts. Pastor Steve’s rollup on gifts over the last 2 weeks of June was really good and essentially nets out to be a couple of takeaways.

• Gifts given by the God are rare
• Gifts are always for the Glory of God alone
• Gifts are always given by the God at His discretion
• Gifts edify/build up the church body

Here we see the extension of abilities to the Disciples by Jesus for the work of ministry. JESUS GAVE THEM POWER to do these things. They did not get these powers by just following Jesus. Like Jesus, the Spirit will give gifts to facilitate ministry and to equip for specific tasks. The focus of the Disciples in this commissioning was to take care of both the spirit (through the Gospel and casting out demons) and the body (by curing diseases). There is nothing said of personal edification or anything…in fact Jesus sent them on their way with no provisions for themselves…. everything would be provided by God through hospitable people in each town that would accept them.

Application:

Firstly, I need to always bump up the presence of supposed gifts with the backing of scriptural support. When it happens, it will fit within the takeaways above. Secondly, God provides when He is using me in the furthering/building of His Kingdom. He equips: I just need to BELIEVE and be OBEDIENT to what He is calling me to do.

Today was all about the 4th of July Parade in Bothell, WA. Marianne did such an awesome job grabbing us some great seats in the shade and we were able to cheer on the Cedar Park Christian Cheer Team as they walked the route. Great memories created today. Thats Bella doing a heart with her hands, Prim standing to her right, and Sophie is in the back of the group pulling the wagon with her hand in the air.

While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”
  But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” Luke 8:49-50 [NKJV]

See, I can only get a few verses each day before the Lord gives me a new primary takeaway, I feel I must absorb and apply. Today is no different.

“While He was still speaking…” is when He was telling the woman who had the Blood disorder that her faith had healed her and to go in peace. So the feeling is that these things are happening right after each other in a quick-fire kind of way. You must notice that Jarius says nothing here…Jesus doesn’t let him get a word in (right after the messenger brings word that his daughter had already passed away). I can see Jesus turning his attention to Jarius and holding His hand up saying [Ben’s paraphrasing and color added], “Don’t lose it, don’t worry or be afraid…Just believe. Your daughter will be made well.” As we follow the rest of the story, that promise is made good on by Jesus telling the girl to get up and she does.

Application:

The order of events here are 1) Jarius comes to plead with Jesus (falling at Jesus’ feet even) to save his daughter who is dying, 2) Jesus’ journey through the city is interrupted by a lady touching His cloak and Jesus stopping to address her, 3) a messenger comes and says that Jarius’ daughter is dead, 4) Jesus comforts and reassures Jarius that his daughter would be made well, and 5) Jesus comes through on that promise…but there are two words that Jesus presses in His reassurance to Jarius, –> “only Believe“. This same set of steps happens all the time to us. So, how do I apply “only Believe” in my earthly walk? I Believe that what God is doing is to bring about His good will and purposes. That when I pray, I pray believing that God’s best outcome for my situation will prevail — this may not be the outcome I am looking for; but it is the outcome leading to the completion of His will on this earth in my set of circumstances. I can’t lose heart; I must keep faith in the moments.

I missed getting my quiet time in yesterday. First, Marianne and I got up early to get to church with ‘the Littles’ by 9am so I could pray with the elders over a man with cancer in our church (come to find out, this is next Sunday [face palm]). Bella and Sophie were not feeling well so they stayed home. Marianne and I attended church at the 9:30am service and then immediately headed south to go look at a couple of houses on Herron Island (about a 90 minute drive south). It was a beautiful day with a leisurely drive, a 10-car ferry ride to and from the island, and then a late trip home getting us back around 8:30pm. A full day of adventure for us and ‘the Littles’.

My Quiet Time this morning was one of those reinforcing moments the Lord is likely laying on my heart through repetition. Yesterday Pastor Steve spoke on the many testimonies of the Apostle Paul as he was led circumstance by circumstance into more and more opportunities to share God’s gift of Grace brought by His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. In every situation Paul leveraged the opportunity of ‘witnessing’.

And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?”
  When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
  But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.”  Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.
  And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” Luke 8:45-48 [NKJV]

Yesterday I read ahead a little and thought that I would be pondering the healing of this woman who had been battling a hemorrhaging disorder she had struggled with for 12 years and how this interrupted Jesus’ quick travel to see Jarius’ daughter who was dying…but no, God had something else to show me today –> It dawned on me that Jesus knew exactly who touched Him. He knows everything.

So, why did He ask? I think it was because that even though the woman had the faith in Him to heal her, she also needed to understand that she could not hide the amazing work that had been done in her by God. The LORD deserves all the glory and we should never withhold the accounts of God’s work in our lives. Notice that as soon as she revealed herself to Jesus and the throngs of people who were around them, He answered with “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

Application:

This whole takeaway sides right in with what Pastor Steve taught yesterday. When the Lord does a work in my life, answers prayer, or when I see the Hand of God moving in powerful ways, I must be open and quick to acknowledge it and call it out…interleaving it into the testimony God has given me. Beyond all else God deserves the Glory and secondly it places me in an Eternal Mindset and focus because that becomes the goal; sowing the seed of God’s goodness and mercy available to anyone who will listen and is being called by God to Himself.

Now when Jesus came back [to Galilee], the crowd received and welcomed Him gladly, for they were all waiting and looking for Him.
  And there came a man named Jairus, who had [for along time] been a director of the synagogue; and falling at the feet of Jesus, he begged Him to come to his house,
  For he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As [Jesus] went, the people pressed together around Him [almost suffocating Him]. Luke 8:40-42 [AMP]

A little bit shorter of a post today — As I was reading the return of Jesus from across the lake (Sea of Galilee), this story of Jarius (A synagogue leader whose name means “Yahweh Shines”) falls at Jesus feet in a desperate request to save his only daughter of 12 years old who was dying.

There is so much more to this story that I will get to tomorrow, but the one thing that kind of hit me was the similarity of this story and the Centurion who also came to Jesus about a sick servant girl. Jarius was a devote follower of the God of Israel and the Centurion was a Gentile (Roman Soldier). Yet, it was the Roman Centurion (a Gentile) who believed that Jesus could heal His servant girl from a distance and the Jewish Leader felt it necessary that Jesus needed to come to his house and lay His hands on his daughter to heal her.

Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and He turned and said to the crowd that followed Him, I tell you, not even in [all] Israel have I found such great faith [as this].

Luke 7:9 [AMP]

The truth is that since Jesus is God and His healing ability has no boundaries. It is the measure of Faith of the requestor that shows Jesus the strength of their devotion. Jesus even called out the fact that the Centurion had more faith than He had seen in others. So, what does that mean for me?

Application:

As a Jesus follower and one who meditates on the Word of God, do I put limitations on the ability of the God I serve? God’s will is perfect and He hears everyone of my prayers; His answers to our needs come in many ways and there are things that will happen to me in my life that are for His Glory and plan that I may never see the benefit of my suffering or waiting. I think of the 2 families we know that lost pregnancies yesterday. One that was really far along and another that was in the first half of the pregnancy. I know that both of these families had saturated their pregnancies in prayer; but God has a different plan and their suffering will play a part in the building of God’s Kingdom and their own good. It will take a measure of faith to see beyond their pain and grief but that Hope we have in Jesus, the God we serve Who can do anything from anywhere, will keep us to the end.

Today my reading was Luke 8:26-39 which is the story of Jesus healing the demoniac by casting out the demons who had over taken him for so long. A couple of things came out of my reading of this account and looking over what some commentators have had to say (Morris & Perrin in Tyndale’s Commentary on Luke). In Matthew’s account it was 2 men that came up to Jesus but in Mark and here in Luke it is just 1 man.

Return to your home, and recount [the story] of how many and great things God has done for you. And [the man] departed, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. Luke 8:39 [AMP]

The first is that the land that Jesus and His disciples had landed after Jesus had calmed the storm and waves, was very much a Gentile area will little to no Jewish occupants. Close by to where the demoniac came up to Jesus, there was an entire legion of Roman soldiers encamped whose mascot was a wild boar (this countryside was apparently known for its population of wild boars). So, the fact that the demoniac said that his name was Legion probably is connected with the Roman encampment and it is possible that the influence of the debauchery of Rome carried out in idolization of Caesar, may have had something to do with the proliferation of demonic spirits that had come into the man.

When the man approached Jesus he addressed him as “Jesus, the Son of the Most High God”. This is another account of the spiritual world being keenly aware of Who Jesus is and the power He holds. Rather than having the threat of being sent into the “Abyss”, the demons asked if they could enter a herd of pigs on the hill; as Jesus gave permission, they did so and then the pigs freaked out and ran down into the lake and drowned. This had to have been a very expensive loss for the pig owner whose herders had gone into town to tell the story of what they had seen.

What ultimately ends up happening is that rather than the towns people grasping the amazing opportunity they had in front of them, they (in fear) asked Jesus to leave and He obliged. However, the man Jesus had saved from his predicament, asked Jesus is he could go with Him. Jesus’ response is the title of my QTVOTD today.

Application:

I think the command by Jesus is the command He has for many of us. Some are called by God to be missionaries, some are called into full time ministry, and then there are those of us who Jesus has saved from the Wrath of God against our sin, who are called to “go home and tell of the great things God has done for us”. Don’t look past the command by Jesus here “Go home and recount the many things GOD has done for you” and the following sentence of what the man did, “He departed, proclaiming through the whole city what JESUS had done for Him.” When I talk about what God has done for me in my life, my dialog should focus on what Jesus has ‘Done’ as well as what He is ‘doing’. My eternity is secure because of a work that has been done by my Savior; the Good News of Jesus is found in what He has done for me and the great things He has done for others. If my focus is on Eternal things, then my goal while I am here is building the Kingdom of God through continuous sharing of God’s goodness and direction in my life.

If you have been following my posts over the last several days, you know that I have been dwelling on this aspect of “Listening” to God. I am convicted by this focus that Jesus is putting in and through my quiet times through Luke. The distractions of life, my sin, and my pride can throw up veils between me and the Lord that make it harder to “Hear” what He has to say about any given moment. What this comes down to ultimately is Faith. Now we come to my reading for today.

And He said to them, [Why are you so fearful?] Where is your faith (your trust, your confidence in Me—in My veracity and My integrity)? And they were seized with alarm and profound and reverent dread, and they marveled, saying to one another, Who then is this, that He commands even wind and sea, and they obey Him? Luke 8:25 [AMP]

The story is a well-known one where Jesus asks His disciples to take Him across the lake (Sea of Galilee). In obedience they get into the boat and head across the water. The Sea of Galilee is subject to these squalls caused by cold air coming down from the Golan Heights and stirring up with the warm air over the lake because the lake is 700 feet below sea level. The winds slam into the lake from above and then shoot up causing up to 3-foot cresting white caps that could overwhelm a boat like the disciples in short order. Before this squall picks up, Jesus falls asleep in the boat (understandable as He had been teaching all day). They wake Jesus in a panic and notify Him that they are all petrified that they are perishing from the onslaught of the waves. Jesus wakes up and ‘rebukes’ the waves and the storm and all becomes calm.

We then get to the verse above where Jesus questions their faith. “Why are you so fearful?! Where is your faith?!” (My emphasis added). I can just see the look on the disciples faces…probably a quizzical questioning look but also a weighing of what just transpired. This man Jesus just commanded the sea and storm to cease, and it obeyed. “Who is this guy who can command the sea and wind, and they obey?”

Application:

What is most impactful to me in this story is the fact that the disciples did not have an Eternal Mindset…they were immersed in the Earthly Mindset of risks of life (in this case a storm that could have killed them). Remember, Jesus had not died and been raised from the dead yet (conquering death), but the disciples had seen all of these miracles He had done preceding this event. For the disciples, they were not yet understanding the ‘complete control’ Jesus had as God. I am no different. I all too often live in my Earthly Mindset making decisions and worrying about the circumstances and risks of life here on this planet…but God wants me to focus on Eternal Things (link to my Mexico post where I committed to living a life focused on Eternity, not Earthly worries). He wants me to trust that He is in control…in control even in my suffering, sorrow, and pain. All of this life (when dedicated to Him) is a path to Eternal Glory and forever with Him in Heaven. My faith must be active; listening to what He commands and then following through in actually applying what I have learned to my Spiritual walk. I am a child of the King and He knows what is ultimately best for me. I must stay true to Him so that I can be the biggest use to Him while I am still here on this earth.

Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.  And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.”  But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” Luke 8:19-21 [ESV]

Once again, we have a follow-up comment by Jesus in the context of ‘The Sower’ parable. When I first read this passage, I was caught off guard and quietly said under my breath, “Jesus! That’s harsh!” What cannot be lost in the reading of these passages is the focus on LISTENING.

By Jesus’ reckoning, true family relationships are no longer represented biologically but now spiritually. Only those who hear the word of God and do it, as the parable of The Sower tells us, can claim rights as Jesus’ mother and brothers. In Luke’s way of speaking, the moral weaknesses of Jesus’ family not only dampen any potential propensity to glamorize members of the holy family (outside of Jesus – think of how the Catholics idolize Mary) but also serve to establish the circle of obedience as the fundamental community in the emerging kingdom of God.

The scenes in these passages are all about hearing. Jesus tells a story about four types of seeds and soils. The first seed falls beside the path and represents people who don’t hear because of demonic forces. The second seed represents people who hear the word but give up when they face persecution. The third seed represents people who don’t hear because of life’s distractions. The fourth seed represents people who hear the word and bear fruit. The most important thing is whether they obey his teachings and bear fruit. For Luke, the quality of one’s life is the most accurate way to measure one’s standing in the Kingdom of God. And the quality of one’s listening to Jesus is the crucial predictor of whether they will bear fruit or not. Even Jesus’ own family members could not guarantee their position inside his family if they failed to listen.

Application:

Am I LISTENTING?? I am so thankful for the work the Lord has done in my life and I cannot overstate the pure joy and love I have for the Holy Spirit as He reveals God’s TRUTH to me. The most important part is whether I apply what I am hearing Him reveal to me day in and day out. Additionally, am I straining to hear everything He has to say? Looking for how the Lord might be speaking to me has been a very big part of my study as of late and more and more it is a repetitive tap on the forehead of my spirit to pay attention.

“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.  For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.  Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” Luke 8:16-18 [ESV]

Yesterday I had the privilege of recording a Podcast episode with Pastor Graydon Cress who is the Pastor of the Canyon Hills School of Discipleship in a series about “Calling”. We talked primarily how I juggle my work, family, and ministry life as well as any tips and tricks I had for navigating secular work as born-again Christian. Today’s time in God’s Word is right in line with some of things we talked about in regard to living out your Faith in your work environment and seeing that activity as your ministry or mission field.

In today’s culture and society, the world makes it very hard to comfortably set our lamp out for all to see. We run the risk of getting canceled, persecuted, belittled, sidelined, or even fired for what we believe. What Jesus says here in verse 17 is that if we are genuine born again Christians and following Jesus obediently, we will not be able to hide who we are or what we believe; it will be revealed exactly who we are in our behavior, love, respect, and integrity….we can only hope for this kind of exposure as we seek to serve the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.

Verse 18 is an awesome and frightening verse at the same time. First let’s talk about what it really means because this could be interpreted as the wealthy person will get wealthier and the poor person will become poorer and lose everything. This is true but not in the context of ‘money’. Jesus is speaking in context of what followed previously which is the Parable of the Sower and that is specifically Spiritual knowledge and understanding. So, when we think about what kind of ‘Soil’ we are, Jesus is saying we need to be careful in how we ‘listen’ to the Living Word. Do we consume and apply diligently the Word of God and grow in our sanctification; which result in more understanding and growth in our relationship with Jesus? Or, does the Word fall flat and we don’t heed the instruction and not or mis-apply the instruction we are given? If it is the latter, Jesus says we don’t have a depth of knowledge and relationship we think and what we do have will be taken from us. Umm, this is scary. FYI – I believe this is a person who has not had a true conversion; one who has not been transformed by the renewing of their mind in Salvation (Romans 12:2).

What a wonderful cap to my time with Graydon yesterday in the scope of my work and how I present myself at Microsoft. I am constantly learning how I can better live out my faith and keep the lamp of the light of Jesus right out there for everyone to see and be available and ready to answer the question that comes —> “Ben, what makes you so different in the work that you do?”

One of the passages I have spent time in over the last 2 weeks (and coming back to it today) is the Parable of the Sower. A contemplation of the types of soil that the seed of God’s Word are distributed, and their explanations is a great study.

“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it.  And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.  And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.  And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Luke 8:5-8 [ESV]

Meaning of the Parable:

Parable Item	Meaning
Sower	God
Seed	God’s Word
The Path	Represents those who never really ‘took’ the Word. They heard but they did not heed. Satan whipped it away before they believed.
The Rocks	Those who are happy to hear the Word but there is no depth in them. In time of testing they fall away…they have not roots to hold them down.
The Thorns	Those who have potential for Spiritual advance but they fill their lives with so many ‘GOOD’ things that there is no room for spiritual fruit.
Good Soil	Those who bring a good and honest heart to the hearing of the Word. They retain the word, and in adhering to the Word they bring forth fruit.

Some people identify more with sowing the seed and this is an often ‘preached’ approach to this passage. However, I think that this is much better applied to ourselves and also as a way of ensuring that we don’t get out of our lane. So, when applied to myself the question I need to ask is what soil am I? If I identify with the good soil, am I bearing spiritual fruit? Is there an aspect of my spiritual walk that is more thorns than good soil? What about the Rocks in my life where I tend to fall apart when in certain circumstances? I know that ‘the Path’ is not reflective of anywhere in my life as I find my solace in God’s Word and His instruction is the life blood of my existence here on earth. I must be honest with myself on these other areas though and ensure that I am cultivating the areas of my life that are not yet ‘Good Soil’.

As for the ‘getting out of our lane’ aspect of this parable…I think that we all too often grade ourselves on who and how many of those we share the gospel with actually accept Jesus and are transformed. But God is the Sower; He alone knows where the seed falls. The bible also says that God is the One Who calls individuals to Himself. He already knows those who have good soil that will result in a fruitful spiritual life. When I start to feel like I can change someone’s heart condition relative to the acceptance of the gospel, I am getting out of my lane. I need to stay in the state that I am…a state of freedom that allows me to share the gospel broadly and rest in the knowledge that God will do the work of calling. I can rejoice and glorify God when I see that He has allowed me to participate in the calling of someone to Himself when I have shared my witness/testimony with them. We just need to share Jesus and let others see Jesus in us…and then let God do the rest.
